Parliamentary Briefing: Settlement Trade and the ICJ (July 2026)

This image was taken on February 2020 in the illegal Israeli settlement of Modi'in Illit in the occupied West Bank.

Overview

This two-page briefing breaks down the International Court of Justice's landmark advisory opinion of 19 July 2024.

In its opinion, the ICJ declared that Israel's occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including its associated settlements, are illegal. The court ordered other countries to halt any assistance to Israel that could help it maintain the occupation, including trade with Israeli settlements.

This opinion provides the legal basis for our campaign to ban UK trade with Israeli settlements.
