UPDATE - 12/11/13: The Indian Supreme Court has granted Soni Sori interim bail, which will last until the final ruling on her bail applications.

Soni Sori was arrested on 4 October 2011 on charges of aiding Maoist rebels, who are fighting an armed insurgency against state forces across Central India. However, we believe that the charges against her are false and politically motivated, and that Soni is a prisoner of conscience having been arrested solely for criticising human rights violations by the state

Fearing her arrest she left her three young children in the care of relatives and trekked through the forests to the nearest town and managed, after a week, to reach Delhi to seek legal assistance. But on 4 October she was arrested by police at a bus stand. She has alleged that the police tortured and sexually assaulted her while she was kept in custody.

Today, Soni now stands acquitted in four of the eight cases filed against her. One by one the charges against her are being shown to be groundless.

We are campaigning for Soni to be released immediately and unconditionally, and for an investigation into the allegations of torture and ill treatment made by her.
