A Brown day for Zardari

It may well have escaped your attention this morning but the president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, is here in the UK on a whistle-stop visit. He’s got a face-to-face meeting with Gordon Brown scheduled in his diary today. I’m sure his mind will be focussed on the job at hand despite the few internal matters he’s got to deal with, as The Telegraph and The Mail have so eloquently put it.The Guardian has learnt – journalise for being told off the record – that counter terrorism will dominate the discussions. Fine, say us, as long as it covers the hundreds of people that have “disappeared” in Pakistan in the so-called “war on terror”, or the issue of UK complicity in torture that The Guardian itself raised so well in April, or the recent killings of civilians by US forces operating in Pakistan.And then there’s the full restoration of the judiciary – a majority of whom were suspended back in November under emergency measures invoked by the former President Pervez Musharraf. Another key demand for Amnesty that has almost no hope of even making the AOBs?
