The Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill was introduced to Parliament on 7 December 2023.
The Bill is an attempt to overcome the judgment of the UK Supreme Court, in agreement with the majority judgments of the Court of Appeal, that the Government's plan to expel people seeking asylum in the UK to Rwanda ("Rwanda plan") is unsafe and unlawful.
This analysis explains how the Government is seeking to overcome that judgment by this Bill; and seeking to prevent any further judicial consideration of the evidence and facts that could prevent its pursuing its Rwanda plan in future. The analysis also summarises some of the key principled objections and risks that arise from this alarming Bill.
