Our right to protest under threat across the world
Authorities across the world are increasingly resorting to unlawful use of force and repressive legislation to crush protests.
Amnesty International launched this interactive digital map to expose the shocking rise in the repression of protesters by states across the globe.
Our map highlights how governments treat protests as a threat, rather than a right, and also shows how authorities view their role in suppressing and subduing protesters, rather than facilitating their rights.
We have found that thousands of people are being unlawfully dispersed, arrested, beaten and even killed during demonstrations. They also face devastating consequences afterwards, just for participating in protests.
Impact in the UK
In the UK alone, police have made over 2100 arrests under the Terrorism Act 2000 for peacefully protesting the banning of Palestine Action in the UK. It is a violation of the UK’s international obligations. And it simply can’t go unchallenged.
You can help end the prosecution of peaceful protesters in the UK!
