AIUK response to consultation on extension of Haslar immigration removal centre

This is Amnesty International UK's response to the crown development consultation on expanding the capacity of Haslar immigration removal centre from 130 to 600 immigration detention bedspaces.

The response provides an analysis of the government's claims in support of its assertion that the expansion is necessary in the national interest. In doing so, it draws particular attention to the longstanding routine and arbitrary use of immigration detention by the Home Office, which consistently means that far more people are detained than the department can, lawfully, safely or practically, remove from the UK.
