Queer Rights Network

The Queer Rights Network (formerly Rainbow Network) defends the rights of LGBTI+ communities across the UK and beyond, rising against structures and institutions that try to erase our existence and rewrite our history. We are activist-led, standing on the shoulders of the trailblazers who have come before us and fighting for the future of queer people yet to come.

What we do

The Queer Rights Networks create campaigns, resources, and actions that support people across the Amnesty movement and beyond to stand up for equality and the human rights of everyone, regardless of sexuality or gender identity.

Led by a committee of queer activists across the UK, we work together to take action that defends LGBTQI+ rights, amplifies queer joy and builds collective power and connection in our communities.

Our current campaigns

Reading for Resistance

Libraries all over the country are being forced or feeling pressured to remove or censor books, especially those with LGBTQI+ themes.

Research from Index on Censorship found that 1 in 3 UK librarians had been asked to remove, or censor, books, and 82% were concerned about rising censorship pressure. The chilling effect of rising anti-rights violence and pressure is also causing libraries to self-censor, desperate not to attract attention and attacks.

This attempt to erase our experiences, voices, and lives from bookshelves and from public life must be met and challenged.

Our campaign, Reading for Resistance, champions libraries and bookshops as defenders of freedom of expression, culture and education and supporting them to continue to be spaces of connection and safety for LGBTQI+ communities.

Ask your local library or bookshop to sign onto our national Queer Stories Covenant as part of this campaign. We must stand in solidarity together against those trying to divide and silence us.

Attacks on trans rights in UK media

Over the past few years, hate crimes against trans people have skyrocketed. In the same period, hostile portrayal of trans people has dramatically increased in the UK media landscape. Amnesty research in 2026 exposed that there were over 17,000 articles published on trans-related topics from 2020–2025 in just four newspapers. That’s nine a day, despite trans people making up approximately 0.5% of the population. The coverage was overwhelmingly negative. The media has extraordinary power in setting the tone of conversations about human rights, and this is particularly the case when speaking about the rights of marginalised communities.

As the Queer Rights Network, we remain vigilant to challenging this damaging discourse and its real-world consequences. We provide opportunities for our network members to resist, rewrite the narrative being pedalled about our trans siblings and show solidarity.

Pride is a Protest

Parts of the Amnesty International UK movement have been attending Pride events and protests for decades. At a time when LGBTQI+ rights are under increasing attack in the UK and around the world, Pride remains as vital as ever: a chance to stand together, demand change and show solidarity with those fighting for their rights.

We provide resources, ideas, and advice to support activists in harnessing the power of Pride to take action for the rights of LGBTQI+ individuals and communities under attack both domestically and globally.
