Getting the right kit

Getting the right kit to run in is going to make your training and racing experience so much more enjoyable. Here are some practical tips to help with your training.

Where to start

You are an athlete and need to dress appropriately. Once you start seeing the price of running shoes and kit options, you can easily be spending hundred of pounds. We want to make sure you have good quality kit but not go overboard.

Running Shoes

To start with, having the right running shoes is essential. You are about to spend a lot of time on your feet so it’s worth investing some time and money into your shoes.

The most important aspect of a new pair of running shoes is that they are comfortable. Running shoes should be the most comfortable pair of shoes you own!

The best way to find the right shoe for you is to go to a running retail specialist and try on a few different brands and models to find a shoe that fits. Reading and hearing other people's reports and reviews on shoes is great, however you need to remember that what works for them might not work for you. You will have a different foot shape to them, different arch height, and different heel size, so some brands might be terrible for you, while others may fit like a glove. This is why we don’t make a particular recommendation about brands.

Other running shoe tips

Your running shoes won’t last forever and will need to be changed. A rough guide would be 500 miles run in them, but the best way to check is go into a store, try a new pair on and feel the difference. When buying new shoes, it is best to have a transfer period between the old and new ones. This not only gives you a chance to slowly break the new ones in, but if they aren’t working, you can replace them but still have a chance to run.

Once you have your shoes, please invest in a good pair of socks. You don't buy a Ferrari and put go kart tyres on it! Get a comfortable sock on your foot. A good sock will wick moisture away from the foot, keeping it cool and reducing the amount of rubbing that can occur. If you suffer badly from blisters, we recommend looking for some toe socks. A brand called injinji makes some great ones.

You’ll want a few layers that you can use to keep yourself warm in over the winter and then have something lighter when the weather heats up. Thin layers are important, and you want to have moisture wicking fabrics which will take sweat away from the body.
