Calling out genocide in Gaza
As the world watched in horror at what was unfolding in Gaza, our research teams worked relentlessly to ensure that justice was possible for civilians living in Gaza, the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel.
Sounding the alarm
The Israeli government’s actions in response to Hamas’s deadly attacks on 7 October 2023 brought Gaza’s population to the brink of collapse.
The speed and scale of the destruction is unprecedented in this century, with entire cities razed to the ground, critical infrastructure destroyed, and large swathes of the region rendered uninhabitable.
Deliberately indiscriminate attacks wiped out entire families. Within a year, its brutal military offensive had killed more than 69,000 Palestinians, including over 20,000 children, and injured over 170,000 more.
The relentless bombardment and restrictions on life-saving humanitarian aid left Gaza’s population facing starvation, displacement and annihilation.
In desperate situations, Amnesty does not turn away. We gathered detailed evidence of the atrocities, and combined this with our legal expertise to sound the alarm that Israel was committing genocide.
A wake-up call to the international community
“Our damning findings must serve as a wake-up call to the international community: this is genocide. It must stop now.”
These were the words of Amnesty’s Secretary General Agnes Callamard following the publication in December 2024 of our meticulously researched report into the situation in Gaza.
The report documents Israel’s actions in Gaza over the nine months to July 2024. It is based on over 200 interviews with victims, healthcare workers and other witnesses, as well as on-the-ground research, and analysis of photos, videos and satellite imagery.
It also takes into account public statements by high-level Israeli officials, finding that they explicitly ordered some of the worst atrocities to be committed.
The report concludes that Israel repeatedly committed genocidal acts, fully aware of the harm it was inflicting, and with the ultimate intent of destroying Palestinians in Gaza.

Towards a lasting peace
Our report added to the mounting criticism of Israel and pressure for leaders around the world to put a stop to the fighting.
In October 2025, Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire deal, brokered by US President Donald Trump, in consultation with a number of other countries in the region.
