Impact Reports and Annual Reviews
2025 was marked by a growing trend in authoritarianism around the world. Unfortunately, the UK is not immune. We have seen an unprecedented use of anti-terrorism legislation to crack down on protestors. We believe that authoritarianism is an existential threat to human rights and it’s why resisting it is now a priority for Amnesty International.
Nevertheless, our work also contributed to some significant successes in 2025:
- Alaa Abdel Fattah in Egypt, Nahid Taghavi in Iran and Angola’s Neth Nahara are just some of those released from detention following tenacious campaigning.
- Our investigations played a key role in the UN Security Council renewing the arms embargo in South Sudan.
- Our evidence on gender persecution in Afghanistan contributed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing arrest warrants for high-ranking Taliban leaders.
