Mass lobby of parliament to ensure protection for all women facing violence in the UK
Date: Wed 4 November 2009
The UK Government is obliged to protect, respect and fulfil women’s human rights. As the 2010 general election is coming up and a change of government is possible, all political parties must address violence against women.
How you can help
Today, Wednesday 4 November, we need you to join hundreds of others in emailing or tweeting your MP to ensure that all women in the UK are given equal access to support and protection from violence - regardless of their immigration status.
Your action online will be echoed by the hundreds of Amnesty activists who are today going to the House of Commons to meet their MPs in person.
You can either email your MP, or send them a message on Twitter. Find out about joining in online
What is a mass lobby?
A mass lobby is when a large number of people go to the House of Commons to raise the same concern with each of their MPs at the same time. Many people never contact their MP, and just writing a letter can make a big difference. Think how much more of an impact it will make for lots of people to contact them on the same issue, at the same time.
If you can attend the lobby in personWe need as many people as possible to make an appointment to see their MP on Wednesday 4 November 2009 at the House of Commons to talk about the end violence against women strategy. The lobby will be running between 12.45 and 3.45. This system is explained in the event briefing, but basically it means you turn up and ask at reception to see your MP on the spot.If you want to make an appointment with your MP in advance, the quickest way is to telephone their constituency or Westminster office and then follow up in writing. Find out who you MP is and contact them:

Bring a camera. It would fantastic if you could get pics of the day, as this will help us illustrate what happened on the day. Also, we hope that you'll be able to get a picture of your MP holding a message of support - details on this will be given in the briefing beforehand. Tweet if you can. We're hoping to get a discussion going online about the lobby - and Twitter provides a really easy and effective way to do this. You simply write a message of no more than 140 characters including the phrase '#masslobby' and everyone will be able to see it. Join Twitter | Find out more about spreading the message online |
