Pay at Amnesty International UK

We want to be transparent about all of our salaries at Amnesty International UK, including that of our most senior staff, and are guided by the NCVO recommendations in their report on senior pay.

Amnesty International UK operates a pay and reward policy that, as part of our offering, aims to attract and retain the best talent needed to take forward our ambitious human rights work within the UK. We aim to pay all roles at the median salary level for the sector and ensure that all elements of pay are fair and transparent and easily understood by our employees. When required we undertake benchmarking exercises using established salary surveys.

Employees who are not already at the top of their pay band benefit from incremental pay increases awarded annually. The Director’s increment is not automatic and is subject to the Amnesty International UK’s Board approval. For roles based in London, a London Weighting element is also included as part of the salary. We don’t apply any form of performance-related pay nor have a bonus scheme.

Amnesty International UK’s Senior Management Team is made up of five roles – the Director of Amnesty International UK, and four Department Directors. The Board has responsibility for agreeing and setting Amnesty International UK Director’s salary band, whilst Department Directors come under our collective bargaining agreement with the union, the same as other staff.

A cost of living award is negotiated annually for all employees through our Pay Negotiation Committee, which includes representatives from Amnesty International UK’s recognised trade union, Unite.

All staff at Amnesty International UK (including the Senior Management Team) are entitled to the same benefits. Employer pension contributions start at 6%, rising to a maximum of 9% dependent on the level of employee contribution made.

Amnesty International UK is a Living Wage accredited employer, meaning all our staff and contractors are paid at least the Living Wage.
