Thanks to Steph for organising and chairing such an interesting talk from Nabila Khan about the plight of the Uyghur people of China, made more harrowing with the knowledge that little can be done except to encourage the Chinese authorities through our letter writing to observe fundamental human rights as set out in the UDHR 1948. Leslie has highlighted to me several issues we should investigate further such as what additional pressure we can usefully put on Chinese authorities. The Amnesty office has not yet informed us about any large scale protests but for the time being it's important that we implement all letter actions.
Palestine/Israel - Gary Ettle Country Coordinator for the region who we know well has forwarded to us the following and bear in mind this predates the latest outbreak of fighting and attacks. The Israel/Palestine team released a long press release today documenting the brutal repression of Palestinian demonstrators in East Jerusalem in the context of the imminent forced evictions in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. The team has been documenting the situation for the last week and include their research in the release. The IOPT team is also closely monitoring the escalation of violence, including in Gaza. There is concern that the situation will continue to worsen and so there will be updates on next steps.
