A couple of days a go Ruth got back from the International Council meeting of Amnesty. To be in the room with over 400 Amnesty people from Togo and New Zealand, Israel and Ukraine was an amazing experience. Do let her know if you have questions.
She wanted to mention one speaker, Justine Ijeomah from the Human Rights & Social Development Foundation of Nigeria. He brought a message of thanks from Moses Akatugba, the 16 year old who was tortured into confessing phone theft & released from death row this year. Both Moses & Justine believe we saved his life, and they wanted us to appreciate how important our activism is. Justine's account of what goes on in Nigerian police cells literally made Ruth put her fingers in her ears in revulsion. On to the next case!
Our next meeting is Monday 7th September, when Jan will be bringing us up-to-date on the Stop Torture campaign.
Our street collection is on Saturday 12th September. Please do contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you can collect - every volunteer makes a big difference!
