Amnesty Group News - October 2021
The group has continued to meet on Zoom and undertook a lot of work to produce our event for the Festival of Justice. On April 24th our event entitled “A Toast to Freedom” took place on Zoom, with music, drama, poetry and reflections from group members on the work of Amnesty. A highlight was the poem “The moment” written for the event by the well-known poet Ian McMillan who read it for us after which we lit candles and held a minute’s silence. It could not have happened without the huge input of one new member Roly.
One advantage of meeting remotely has been that we have been able to join other groups and hear a number of speakers on a variety of issues including modern slavery, China’s belt and road policy and the Occupied Palestinian territories. Several group members have been attending workshops about the proposed legislation in the UK on immigration and human rights and have been lobbying local MPs.
Due to uncertainty about Covid we have decided not to hold this year’s “Write For Rights” event in person but we will be contacting as many people as we can to invite them to take part in sending cards and writing letters to those people selected for this year’s campaign.
Do contact us if you would like to take part.
