May letter from our secretary
Thank to everyone who came to the last group meeting. We heard from our speaker Monika about Etka Parishad and the March for Justice. Please see this link for more information http://www.marchforjustice2012.org/index.php We will have declarations of support at the next meeting for anyone who would like to show their support.
Control Arms Trade
Our next meeting on Wed 13th June will focus on the Control Arms Trade campaign ready for the London Group action on Saturday 16th June. For part of the meeting we will be decorating white vests which will be used in the action on the Saturday so please bring any paints, ribbons, pens etc to help decorate!
You can sign the petition to David Cameron calling for a bulletprood Arms Trade Treaty on this here http://protectthehuman.amnesty.org.uk/petition_actions/disarm-dictators and there is a link top a pdf of this if you would like to print to get friends to sign. I also attach a Q & A on the issues.
It would be great to see you on Saturday 16th June for the action- this will be in central London with other London groups and it is great to work with other groups to make an impact on such an important issue. Final details about the day to follow soon.
Refugee week is 18-24 June and is a time to discover and celebrate the contribution that refugees bring to the UK and to encourage better understanding betweem communities.
There are 2 events to highlight:
Sunday 17 June 2-7pm
Bernie Spain Gardens, upper Ground, London, SE1 (adjacent to Oxo Tower)
The first day of this year's Celebrating Sanctuary London is a much loved multi-art and free festival on the South Bank. It is a concoction of live music, free-flowing spoken word, sizzle of food and rythms of dance. More information here http://www.refugeeweek.org.uk/Events/london/south-bank-bernie-spain-gardens
Friday 22nd June 6-10pm
Victoria & Albert Museum, Cromwell Road, London, SW7 2RL
This Late Friday event is our first collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum. It is based around the film, which celebrates its 70th year. The event will feature an acoustic music fantasia, with three amazing reincarnations of Sam in Rick's cafe on three pianos placed around the museum - featuring Jewish Algerian pianist Maurice El Medioni together with Syrian-born, London-based Iraqi musician Khyam Allami (piano and oud), Palestinian singer Reem Kelani and Sierra Leone born Alex Wilson (Latin Jazz piano) - plus dancers, sounds of souk, performance artists and interventions, workshops and conversations. All of this will bring to life the film and some of the related emotion of moral and human struggle in the extraordinary and beautiful settings of the V&A
