GOOD NEWS RE Tural Abbasli but others need help

And/Or write to:
President of the Azerbaijan Republic
Office of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic
19 Istiqlaliyyat Street
asking him to please release Tural Abbasli and all prisoners of conscience.
I am writing to you to express my very deep concern regarding the case of Tural Abbasli, a postgraduate journalism student and the leader of the youth wing of Musavat, who I understand is serving a sentence of two and a half years in prison.
Amnesty International, an organisation which promotes human rights around the world, considers Tural Abbasli to be a prisoner of conscience - imprisoned solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression. I am further concerned to learn that Tural Abbasli is just one of 12 people detained in the spring of 2011 and currently in jail in Azerbaijan whom Amnesty International recognises as prisoners of conscience.
I urge you to ensure that Tural Abbasli, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev, Vidadi Isganderov, Shahin Hasanli, Zulfugur Eyvazov; Sahib Kerimov, Babek Hasanov, Arif Hajili, Mahammad Majidli, Ahad Mammadli, Rufat Hajibaili and Ulvi Guliyev are released immediately and unconditionally.
I am also very concerned by reports that Tural Abbasli was kicked, punched and beaten with a baton by police officers at Yasamal district police station following his arrest on 2 April 2011, and I urge that these allegations be investigated promptly and thoroughly. Furthermore, I understand that since Tural Abbasli’s arrest, several members of his family have been suddenly fired from their jobs. Please do everything within your power to ensure that Tural Abbasli’s family are not subjected to harassment or reprisals in relation to Tural’s peaceful political activity.
I am further deeply concerned by reports that 17 people were arrested on 6 March 2012 when police violently dispersed a protest in Baku, which had been organised in response to reports that two detainees - Babek Hasanov and Mahammad Majidli – had been beaten up by prison guards on 4 March 2012. It is very worrying to learn that five of the peaceful protesters – youth activists Jabbar Savalan, Dayanat Babayev, Majid Marjanli, Abulfaz Gurbanly and Beyin Hasanli – were beaten by police. I understand that all 17 people arrested on 6 March 2012 were released from detention later the same day, however it remains extremely important that an investigation be launched into the reports of assault. I urge you to ensure that an immediate investigation be launched into the beating by police of Jabbar Savalan, Dayanat Babayev, Majid Marjanli, Abulfaz Gurbanly and Beyin Hasanli. The allegations of beatings by prison guards of prisoners of conscience Babek Hasanov and Mahammad Majidli must also be investigated without delay. All those found to be responsible for these abuses should be brought to justice.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to call for an end to the politically motivated trials of activists and peaceful protesters.
My thanks for your urgent attention to this important matter.
