17th April, 7:30pm, Monthly meeting at the Liberal Synagogue in St John's Wood (28 St. John's Wood Road, NW8 7HA).
Agenda for the meeting:
1) In place of the last meeting, we had a visit from Dennis Edney QC, lawyer of Omar Khadr, former Guantanamo Bay prison inmate. The event was very well attended with many students from nearby schools. The group will discuss whether a donation might be made to the charity Dennis has set up and if so, how much. Further information here:
2) The financial accounts for the year are ready - these have been prepared by our treasurer, Bee, who will run us through these at the meeting.
3) We will watch an award winning film on miners in South Africa - the synopsis is as follows: 'Renowned director Rehad Desai returned to the events of August 2012, when the Marikana mine in South Africa experienced the worst episode of bloodshed since the end of apartheid. For seven days, thousands of miners protested for a living wage. The non-violent demonstration was brought down through an intervention by state police forces, in which more than 30 miners were shot dead and many others injured. In this political thriller, the director reconstructs the sequence of events through testimonies and footage of the massacre, drawing a disturbing picture of the mechanism of power in South Africa, where corporations make profits by exploiting the poorest.'
The film is 85 mins long so we will not watch the entire film but most of it and anyone who wants to watch the full feature can do so from the link above.
