MINUTES OF THE MEETING 9TH APRIL

Accounts – We have access to on-line banking
Monthly Action - to keep the Human Rights Act which enshrines the European Convention on Human Rights. Politicians speak of replacing the HR Act and AI are putting a positive spin on keeping it.
Letters are being written to local media and Prospective Parliamentary Candidates and members are encouraged to tweet the message.
Next meeting – 14th May – 7.30 – 9.30 pm at Audrey’s, 647 High Road, Benfleet (front door in Gleneagles) Room for two cars on the driveway on the left-hand side of the bungalow, also a small car park just beyond the Tarpots (Harvester) pub.
Members will look out for an inexpensive room to be a permanent home for the Group Meetings. Alternatively, suggestions were made to use homes for Committee and Planning Meetings and once a quarter have a public meeting with lots of publicity. Audrey will check out the Leigh Quaker Meeting and Heidrun will approach St. Johns.
Fund-raising Martin’s walk in Hockley Woods is arranged for Friday 26th June, time to be arranged. That date is the International day in support of Victims of Torture
Liesbeth ten Ham took us through a workshop about recruiting new members.
We were encouraged to make use of Facebook and Twitter as well as email to reach a wider public. Pass on the message that though the subject matter is grim, the emphasis should be that Amnesty works. Letter writing does have effect. To identify the groups who would be interested in our work: Ethnic groups, Faith communities, Professionals ie Solicitors, Political groups, local charities, care homes, schools, colleges university, local community (Big Event). Work with sympathetic groups such as Liberty. (Human Rights Watch raises money for research – Amnesty acts)

Give out positive messages about Amnesty
Members to do biographies for the website on why they joined AI
