Writing for Khalil Ma'Touq
As many of you will know we are looking after a long term case file for a human rights lawyer for many years, Khalil Ma'Touq, who disappeared on his way to work on 2 October 2012. The Syrian authorities have not responded to Khalil's families repeated requests to be told why Khalil was arrested and to provide them with information on his whereabouts and situation. For Khalil this detention is particularly dangerous because he suffers from advanced lung disease caused by a chronic inflammatory condition which has resulted in him having severe breathing difficulties. According to what his family and friends have been told his health has gravely deteriorated during his detention. Amnesty International consider him to be a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for his peaceful human rights related activities.
Every month the local group in North Herts of Amnesty International write to the Ambassador of Syria to the UN, Bashar Ja'afari, PhD, to ask him to please use his influence to request that the Syrian authorities reveal the fate and whereabouts of Khalil Ma'Touq and to grant him access to his family and lawyer, and also that the Syrian authorities grant Khalil Ma'Touq access to any medical attention that he may require.
It would be great if more people could also write to the Ambassador of Syria to the UN to show solidarity and to make more of an impact of the requests. If you are able to, could you write to
