Meeting Minutes June 2016

These are the minutes for the Amnesty London Region Meeting from Wednesday 1 June 2016 at 7:30pm in the Human Rights Action Centre, 17-22 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EA.

Announcements:

  • Anastasia is in Greece this week, and Stephen has stood down as Regional Rep.

  • No London Conference this year, but Skill Share will take place at HRAC instead.

Local group news:

  • Blackheath and Greenwich had poetry readings at local group meeting from Human Rights Creative Writers. 42nd Book Sale 9am-5pm on Saturday 18 June at Church of the Ascension in Blackheath.

  • Beckenham and West Wickham will be at Penge Festival on 9 June.

  • Mayfair and Soho's recent AmnesTea raised £50. Upcoming fundraising walks.

  • Hornsey and Wood Green had a sponsored walk raising £300. Sharing stall with Hampstead and Belsize at Fair and Square Festival at Highgate.

  • LDN are seeking new committee members. Panel discussion on abortion in HRAC on 13 June.

  • Kingston heard a talk from Country Coordinator for Eritrea Alex Jackson at the May meeting, and will be campaigning on 11 June on behalf of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

  • Richmond and Twickenham heard a talk from Martin Barber, Advisor to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs about the first World Humanitarian Summit held on 23-24 May in Istanbul. Next meeting on 9 June with speaker Eileen Chubb of Compassion in Care on whistleblowing.

  • Enfield and Barnet will be at the East Barnet Festival on 3 July and the Palmers Green Festival in September.

  • Hampstead and Belsize are attending a screening of "Open Bethlehem" in the Mosaic Rooms Earls Court next Wednesday 8 June.

  • Westminster and Bayswater recently raised £800. AmnesTea on 10 July at St Peter's Church.

  • Lambeth and Wandsworth visited Nunhead Cemetery Open Day. Lambeth Country Show on 16-17 July.

Refugees Welcome action on Sunday 3 July 3-5pm, hopefully on Islington Green. There will be music, speakers and actions: games, letter writing, giant letters from the AGM! Volunteers welcome as well.

Pride in London:

  • Saturday 25th June parade, need to assemble at Portland Place by 11:30. If you join the parade, you will need to be available until around 3:30.

  • Potentially will be a new float, Six volunteers needed to be wheel stewards. No stickers but badges and flags available.

  • Theme this year is "No Filter"

  • Stalls in Soho Square and Trafalgar Square. Volunteers needed from 12-8pm.

  • Contact pride@amnesty.org.uk to join the parade and the LGBTI network to join the stalls.

AOB:

  • We took part in an action to support Istanbul Pride, which will take place on the same day as Pride in London.

  • Roger is setting up the Amnesty London Artists Group for creative writing, visual, culinary and performing arts.

  • LGBTI event at RichMix on Wednesday 15 June.

  • Human Rights Creative Writers are looking to perform at HRAC on 4th October.

  • Socialist Film Co-op meet near Warren Street station.

  • Journeymen Theatre are available for bookings at local group meetings.
