Groups activities

Kingston’s stall at the Korean Festival went well and created a lot of interest. There were hand-outs to give out to people and donations were collected.

Enfield & Barnet’s stall at the Palmer’s Green Festival made £90 and they asked people to sign petitions and letters.

Hampstead & Belsize Park’s Roma event at the HRAC received good feedback and went well. Their Syrian event in Parliament Square generated a lot of interest a quite a few people signed a petition.

City & Tower Hamlets’ coffee shop event in Brick Lane is now a monthly event and is going well. The café is a community based coffee shop. They also have fortnightly meetings have recently recruited three new members. City & Tower Hamlets also held a book sale at the Vibe bar recently and made £800. It went so well they are having another on 8th December (see below).

Islington and Hackney’s comedy night at the Hackney Attic was a sell-out (approx. 150 people) and a great success. The raffle went well and they also did a photo action for a Burmese prisoner of conscience.

Beckenham & West Wickham guest speakers went well and included one on women in Afghanistan.

London Street Collection – various groups took part and although some didn’t make as much as they would hope for it was felt that it was still worth doing. Richmond raised £850 (with approx. 25 collectors), Kingston £470 (with approx. 15 collectors), Mayfair and Soho £600, Hornsey and Wood Green £755 (a member of this group commented that they found Shan’s assertiveness training last year helpful and that they doubled what they collected last year as a result), Enfield raised £90 and IHAG £200. Blackheath and Greenwich collected £72.70 and City & Tower Hamlets £220. Two of their collectors were in fancy dress and they gave out free cookies outside Tower Hill Station which seemed to attract interest.

London Conference and Art Exhibition

The London Conference is on Saturday 1st February and the theme is ‘All Ways: Always’. It will largely focus on LGBTI rights but also encompass HIV/AIDS, gender equality and maternal health. The group discussed the topics and suggested possible speakers and workshop ideas. Tickets will cost £10 (£5 concession) and Roger is getting assistance from AIUK with the ticketing, flyer and lunch. Time is likely to be 10am – 5pm.

Possible ideas for the conference include a screening of the film ‘Call me Kuchu’ which explores the struggles of the LGBT community in Uganda, focusing in part on the 2011 murder of LGBT activist David Kato. This is 90 minutes long. This could be followed by a panel discussion. Suggestions for the panel included Peter Tatchell, a speaker from the church, a Muslim gay group, someone against type – ie ‘a lad’.

During the day there will also be a speaker from the ICM, an introduction to ‘My Body, My Rights’ and the new torture campaign and an action (likely to involve Dan Jones).

The opening night party/private view for the art exhibition will be held on Wednesday 22nd January 2014 at the Rich Mix, 35-47 Bethnal Green Rd, London E1 6LA. The exhibition will run from 22nd January until 1st February.
