January Meeting Notes
At our recent meeting we discussed the Regional Conference, which took place last Saturday, 26 January, in Aylesbury. Speakers include Kate Allen, the Director of Amnesty International UK, and human rights issues in North Africa, and Syria will be featured topics.
We also planned our next event, a public conversation with Saeed Amireh, an important figure in the Palestinian non-violent action campaign. This will take place at Wesley Methodist Church on Monday 11 February, 7:30pm.
At the last meeting we also discussed our AmnesTEA event in December, which raised £64 and resulted in at least 15 cards being sent as part of Amnesty's Greetings Card campaign. We hope this will become an annual event. We received and signed a petition organised by Amnesty on behalf of Shaker Aamer, marking the 11th anniversary of the creation of the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay and asking for Aamer to be freed or tried. And we discussed the recent Amnesty EGM, the resolutions passed and not passed and their implications (in brief, it seems, continue with the international strategy but reconsider the process by which this may be legitimised and carried through).
