Justice for Hakamada Iwao

Join Devizes Amnesty Group on Saturday, 2nd March outside St Mary’s Church, Devizes, SN10 1DS, at 10 am to mark the birthday of Hakamada Iwao.

77-year-old Hakamada Iwao is believed to be the world’s longest serving death row inmate. He has spent 44 years in prison under the threat of execution for a crime he says he did not commit. He is the Devizes Amnesty Group's individual at risk.

In 1968, Hakamada was convicted of murder on the basis of a confession which he later took back. We believe his trial was unfair and psychiatric examinations have shown he has a mental illness as a result of his years on death row. Hakamada has appealed his conviction twice without success, but new forensic tests have brought fresh hope.

Chair of the Devizes Group has been in contact with Amnesty Japan and they have asked us to mark Hakamada's birthday. The reply from Japan was as follows:

Dear Michael,

Thank you very much for contacting us. My name is Hiroka Shoji a
campaigner of AI Japan. We are very grateful for your continued work
surrounding Hakamada case.

For the next step, there are two things we would like to suggest. As you
know, execution took place yesterday, and the current Minister of
Justice seems to execute in a high pace this year. So what is really
important for given this situation in Japan is to urge the government to
stop execution.

mates/

Another thing you can do to send solidarity to Hakamada. His birthday is
coming up soon on March 10, and along with his supporter groups and
other religious groups, we are planning a public action on the streets,
so if you could sent us something to show solidarity to him which can be
used at this public demonstration would be nice. It is always nice to
show not only Hakamada himself but also the public that people around
the globe cares about him. Whichever format is fine, but since this will
be used on the streets, it will be nice if it's something we can hold on
our hands or something we can display.

Do feel free to contact me if there's anything I can do. Again, we are
thankful for your email.

Best regards,
Hiroka Shoji
