Iwao Hakamada News
AI Japan has provided an update on Iwao Hakamada to Devizes Amnesty Group
Iwao Hakamada, 78, was until recently on Death Row in Japan. Following his release on 27 March he is back in his home town living with his sister, Hideko at her apartment in Hamamatsu city in Shizuoka prefecture. His mental health problems mean he has little understanding of what is going on around him or his release. His health has not been helped by 33 years in solitary confinement. He has no feelings of joy, surprise or anger. He does not read newspapers or watch TV.
There is some hope that sometime in the Autumn the Tokyo High Court will bring together Iwao Hakamada, the prosecutor and the Court to consider his case for innocence. AI Japan is part of the global campaign asking the Prosecutor to withdraw the appeal against the decision of a retrial.
We have been asked to continue to support Iwao Hakamada through the global action. Occaisional messages of support to Hideko and Iwao Hakamada can be sent to AI Japan, firstname.lastname@example.org.
