10th December - International Human Rights Day

Friday 10th December, International Human Rights Day, is the anniversary of the day, in 1948, when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is a milestone document, which proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being, regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Our Chippy Amnesty Group will be commemorating this occasion by holding a vigil on the Town Hall steps.  Do come and join us.  We shall be there from 4pm to 6pm.

We all need to stand up for these Rights which are too often under threat.  By holding this vigil we hope to remind people of the importance of protecting our Human Rights to ensure that they cannot be eroded

And, if you think you can't make a difference or that these don't matter to you, heed these words of Eleanor Roosevelt:

"Where, after all, do universal human rights begin?  In small places, close to home -- so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. [...]  Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."
