Voices for Change Finals
The Voices for Change Song Competition final was a hands-down success. The String Jam Club was packed to capacity and the young artists performed superbly.
The all-star judging panel, led by world-famous protest song writer Julie Felix, had a great time watching the performances, and although the standard was extemely high from all four entries, their vote was unanimous. The Ella Stone prize was awarded to the group of young rappers, Unheard Voices and their song, "Outspoken".
The runners- up also received a cheque and recognition for their talent and hard work.
Corin Anderson and Leanne McFadden, "Stand Up, Stand Out"
Highrise, "Putin's Deck of Cards"
Erin Highton, "Back Down"
String Jam Club presented a special "Most Promising Newcomer" award to 11-year old Rory Piercy from Earlston, who didn't quite make it to the finals, but whose song really impressed the judges.
We were sent a large number of entries to this competition from Borders schoolchildren, aged 11 to 18, and the judges were impressed by the range of issues addressed, as well as the diversity of musical styles and presentations.
Our heartfelt thanks go once again to Allie Fox of the String Jam Club in Selkirk, who made the staging of the competition possible, and to Ella Stone's daughter, who presented the prizes on the evening and of course to the legacy from Ella Stone, without whom the project would never have taken place.
