The plight of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and her daughter, Gabriella, who have been imprisoned in Iran for over three years continues to shock.

Cardiff Amnesty International and Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival are holding a third stand-up comedy evening to highlight this continuing injustice and inspire action in Naz's case.

Nazanin was returning to the UK on the 3 April 2016 after a family holiday when she was detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. She was sentenced to five years for secret reasons. Her daughter Gabriella, then only 22 months old, was left stranded in Iran with her grandparents.

The intervention by then Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, in November 2017 raised the profile of this injustice and yet still Nazanin has not been released. Cardiff Amnesty International has been campaigning for Nazanin’s release since June 2016 following a candlelight vigil outside the Senedd organised by her sister-in-law, Rebecca Ratcliffe, a GP in Cwmbran.

The third “Naz Night” of comedy at Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival on Sunday 07 July will feature an eclectic selection of superb comics from the professional circuit, compered once again by the outstanding Clint Edwards (2017 and 2018 host). The event will also be the first opportunity for Cardiff Amnesty to publicly display the nationally contributed action "Knit for Naz" (https://amnestycardiff.org/2019/03/13/knit-for-naz/).

For the last few months amateur knitters from around the UK have been sending knitted chain links to Cardiff in support of Nazanin's cause, and Stand Up in the Park 2019 will be the first time this link is displayed in public! By the date of Stand Up in the Park, Nazanin will have spent 1,190 days in prison separated from her daughter and loved ones. Cardiff Amnesty therefore wanted to highlight this ongoing injustice by encouraging everyone to knit a symbolic chain, each link of which will contain 1,190 stitches.

The results will be revealed that evening.

Stand Up in the Park takes place in Sophia Gardens on Sunday 07July at 8.00pm with a bar from 6.30pm. All seating is numbered and under cover.

Tickets are priced £18 available from https://everymantheatre.co.uk/event/stand-up-in-the-park/

See you there!
