Almost 20'000 people urged the Prime Minister to help people who are fleeing war in Ukraine.

Thank you to the tens of thousands of you who took action emailing the Prime Minister to demand the UK government urgently steps up to support refugees fleeing Ukraine.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a human rights catastrophe. The UK government must do its part to help those fleeing the war.

Thank you to the tens of thousands of you who took action emailing the Prime Minister to demand the UK government urgently steps up to support refugees fleeing Ukraine. The sheer volume of your response has been incredible.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a human rights catastrophe and a crime under international law. Thank you for recognising that the UK government must do its part to help those fleeing the war.

What’s been happening?

Millions of people have fled Ukraine, seeking safety and refuge in neighbouring countries and beyond.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been marked by indiscriminate attacks on civilian areas and strikes on hospitals and schools. They’ve shown a blatant disregard for civilian lives, including children, by using ballistic missiles in densely populated areas.

The UK government has committed to provide sanctuary to some of those fleeing Ukraine, but the response has been slow, chaotic and doesn't go nearly far enough.

To add insult to injury, despite this humanitarian crisis and those in countries including Afghanistan and Syria, the government is still pursuing plans to penalise refugees entitled to asylum in the UK, through the Nationality and Borders Act.

What now?

It has been over 6 months since Russia's full-scale war of aggression in Ukraine. Join us in calling on the UK Foreign Secretary to help deliver justice for Ukraine. Russia must end the aggression against Ukraine.

The Foreign Secretary can help deliver justice for Ukraine by bolstering international justice mechanisms to hold perpetrators to account.

Act now

As Russia’s full-scale war of aggression rages on, the UK government continues to add insult to injury by pursuing the devastating Nationality and Borders Act.

The Nationality and Borders Bill passed on 27 April 2022. The Act creates significant obstacles, penalties and harms to people seeking asylum in the UK- during one of the most dire refugee crisis in Europe.

The schemes for Ukrainian and Afghan refugees have proved to be ineffective and inaccessible to many of the people for whom they are notionally intended.

Steve Valdez-Symonds, Amnesty International UK’s Refugee and Migrant Rights Director, said:

“The UK government has ripped up the Refugee Convention – a longstanding international agreement"
