Zimbabwe: Threat of police beatings and torture for Trade Unionists during ‘stay away’ action
Amnesty International is concerned that activists from the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) who will go on a job stay away action on 3 and 4 April 2007 are at risk of being beaten by police and tortured while in police custody. The job “stay away” action was organised to protest government’s failure to address the declining economic situation in Zimbabwe. It is feared that the police will use excessive force to disperse demonstrations organised by the ZCTU as has been in the past.

Zimbabwe: Government uses repressive legislation to put rights under siege
The Government of Zimbabwe has introduced national legislation to silence criticism and opposition, perpetrate human rights violations and place the basic rights of the Zimbabwean people under siege, Amnesty International said in a report published to mark World Press Freedom Day on Saturday 3 May.

Zimbabwe: Stop human rights violations
On Monday 19 March, two members of the women's organisation Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) were reported to have been taken from their homes in Harare at gunpoint by police and blindfolded. This follows events in Zimbabwe on 11 March 2007, during which about 50 activists were arrested at a public meeting.
