Amnesty International Middle East and North Africa Deputy Director Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui said:“These harsh prison sentences against young women and girls come after the adoption of a draconian protest law and the violent dispersal of an activists’ protest in Cairo.“These women and girls should have never been arrested. They are now prisoners of conscience and must be released immediately and unconditionally.“Instead of imprisoning peaceful protesters, the authorities should be ensuring prompt, independent and impartial investigations into police abuse of protesters, reining in security forces, and upholding the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.”
