On the 7th of August 2007, the Foreign Secretary and the Home Secretary decided to request the return of five British residents detained in Guantanamo Bay. Amnesty UK has been campaigning for the return of these men since the beginnning of their imprisonment and activists have worked to insist that the UK must make representations to end their illegal detention.
Amnesty remains concerned that the UK government did not call for release of Ahmed Belbacha, who remains in detention at the base. Ahmed Belbacha is of Algerian origin and is at serious risk of torture and/or ill-treatment if he is returned to Algeria. We are calling on the government to clarify the reasons for not requesting his liberty along with those men who may finally, after years of detention, be released.
Amnesty believes that the UK Government has a moral and legal duty to make immediate representations for the release and return of Ahmed Belbacha. Sign our petition to bring all UK residents home.
I call on the UK Government to take immediate action to have Ahmed Belbacha returned to the United Kingdom where he can answer any legitimate charges against him in a fair judicial process or be released to his family.
