Demonstration tomorrow at Russian Embassy in Edinburgh as Pussy Riot verdict announced

Amnesty International is organising a demonstration at the Russian Embassy in Melville Street, Edinburgh, tomorrow at midday, just as the verdict in the trial of Russian singers from punk band Pussy Riot, is expected to be announced. The event - at 12 noon on Friday - is part of Amnesty’s high-profile campaign on behalf of Maria Alekhina, Ekaterina Samutsevich and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who are accused of “hooliganism on the grounds of religious hatred” and face possible prison sentences of three years in jail, if found guilty . Amnesty considers the three women to be prisoners of conscience, detained solely for the peaceful expression of their beliefs. The organisation is calling for their immediate release. People attending the demonstration will be wearing the singers’ trademark fluorescent balaclavas to show their solidarity with them, while awaiting the verdict in the case. |
