Shaker Aamer case: Reaction to Hague comments

Posted: 18 November 2010

Responding to reports that the Foreign Secretary William Hague has raised with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton the question of resolving the case of Shaker Aamer, a former UK resident detained at Guantánamo for nearly nine years, Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said:

“It’s extremely welcome that Mr Hague has raised Shaker Aamer’s case with Secretary of State Clinton.

“We now need to see the foreign secretary agreeing with the US authorities a timetable for Shaker’s speedy return to his family in the UK.

“Unless the US authorities can demonstrate that Shaker Aamer is to be allowed a proper trial, he should be freed and returned home to Britain at the earliest opportunity.”
