Mexico: 'V-Day' march to demand justice over Juarez and Chihuahua women killings - 14 February

Posted: 30 January 2004

The two organisations and an expected several thousand people will be marching from El Paso, USA across the US-Mexican border to Juárez on Saturday February 14 2004.

Amnesty International said:

"Hundreds of young women have been murdered with impunity in the past decade in Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua. Many were abducted and sexually assaulted. Many others remain missing.

"We are joining with the women of Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua and their families to demand an end to impunity and the prevention of further violence against women."

Mothers organisations have also organised other activities, including a roundtable event to discuss proposals for ending impunity and a special performance of the play "The Vagina Monologues."

This award-winning play, written by V-Day founder Eve Ensler, will be performed by Lilia Aragon, Marinitia Escobedo, Laura Flores, Monica Alicia Juarez, Eve Ensler, Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Christine Lahti, and Shiva Rose.

The day will also include discussion on gender violence by Mexican feminist Marcela Lagarde, an ecumenical remembrance service for the victims and honouring of their mothers and families at the Benito Juárez Monument.

Many local and international women's and human rights groups, political leaders, and celebrities will take part in the event in Ciudad Juárez.
