Burma (Myanmar): Amnesty International plans second visit

Amnesty International said:

"Our concerns in Burma are wide-ranging. We are planning to discuss the human rights situation with the government, including the justice system, political imprisonment and the release of all prisoners of conscience."

The findings of the delegation will be made public after the mission.

This will be Amnesty International's second visit to Burma. The first ever trip took place between 30 January and 8 February 2003. At that time the delegation met with:

• various government ministers, and police and prison officials;
• members of Burmese civil society, including members of the National League for Democracy (NLD, Burma's main political party) and NLD General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi;
• representatives of international organisations and the diplomatic and business communities; and
• political prisoners, whom they visited at Insein Prison and at the Guard Ward of Yangon General Hospital.
