USA: Gay man to be executed after sexuality raised at trial

A gay man in the US state of North Carolina is due to be executed by lethal injection on Friday 3 October despite serious concerns that his sexuality was used against him during his trial as part of the prosecution's bid to obtain the death sentence. Posted: 26 Sep 2003

India: Dangerous proposals to 'reform' criminal justice system criticised

Amnesty International today condemned the government-appointed Malimath Committee's recommendations to the Indian government on criminal justice reform as dangerous. The human rights organisation said the proposals threatened to increase incidences of torture, unfair trials and discriminatory treatment of the poor, women and minorities if implemented. UK: New Government human rights report - Amnesty International reaction

Reacting to the Foreign Office' publication of its annual human rights report this afternoon, Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said:"While the Foreign Office has done valuable work on combating torture and use of the death penalty - and the annual report is itself an important contribution to human rights debate, the fact is that the government has been disappointing on crucial human rights issues in the past year. Turkmenistan: New report condemns 'appalling' abuses amid president's personality cult

Releasing a new report on Turkmenistan today (12 September 2003), Amnesty International condemned the country's human rights record as "appalling" and noted that while the Turkmen president Saparmurat Niyazov maintained a political personality cult, human rights abuses had markedly increased following an alleged assassination attempt on the president last November.
