Nawal El Saadawi in conversation with Yasmin Alibhai-Brown

Internationally acclaimed writer and activist Nawal El Saadawi is perhaps most famous for her books on the oppression of Arab women. An outspoken critic of successive governments in her native Egypt, she has been harrassed, imprisoned and threatened, and in 1988, was forced to flee the country when her name appeared on an extremist organisation's death list. Having returned to Egypt in 1996, Nawal El Saadawi remained a thorn in the side of conservative forces in her homeland and five of her books were banned at the Cairo book fair in 2007.

To mark the re printing of three of her most famous books, The Hidden Face of Eve, God Dies by the Nile, and Woman at Point Zero, Nawal El Saadawi will be doing a short tour of the UK;  this event will be one of her few public engagements.

Nawal will be discussing her life and work, and in particular, issues relating to violence against women,  with writer and commentator Yasmin Alibhai-Brown. As well as writing a weekly column in The Independent newspaper, Yasmin is a regular contributor to a wide range of radio and television current affairs programmes and frequently comments on issues in the UK such as racism, inequality and social cohesion. This promises to be a fascinating discussion between two controversial and inspirational women.

The discussion will be followed by a book signing and drinks reception.
