Book launch - Bergen-Belsen 1945: A medical student's journal

A section of the cover for Michael Hargrave's Bergen-Belsen 1945: A medical student's journal

Date: Wed 6 November 2013

Please join us for this event to mark the publication of a diary kept by Michael Hargrave, a young medical volunteer in newly liberated Belsen in 1945.

The book is a meticulous account of medical practice and concentration camp conditions. In April 1945 Michael Hargrave was a medical student at Westminster Hospital when he volunteered to go to Holland to help the Dutch – but it transpired that his group of 95 students from different London hospitals were in fact going to help prisoners in Belsen concentration camp, liberated a few days before. Michael was 21 years old, in his fourth year at medical school.

Our discussion focusses on the lessons learned, particularly in the field of medical ethics, the right to health and the subsequent rapid growth of the human rights movement.

Panelists include Professor Jonathan Wolff, director of the Centre for Philosophy, Justice and Health at UCL.

The event is free but please ensure that you book your place in advance
