Europe: A peaceful or a warlike continent?
Date: Sat 5 October 2013
Is Europe a 'chocolate soldier'?
The European Union was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2012 for uniting the continent after two world wars. Does the prize still apply today? Is Europe actually a 'chocolate soldier', carrying chocolates in an ammunition pouch, not bullets?
We'll look at the shadow of extraordinary rendition, the struggle for conscientious objection in Turkey, the arms industry in Europe and how the EU uses the cocoa trade to promote human rights.
Speakers include
- Danny Vannucchi, Amnesty International Security and Human Rights Campaigner - on extraordinary rendition in the War on Terror: is there justice for victims in Europe?
- Özgür Heval Ҫınar, St. Antony’s College, Oxford - on the struggle for conscientious objection in Turkey and wider Europe
- Richard Kotter (Northumbria University) and Iris Weber (Northumbria/v.f.h) - with an interactive session on cocoa-producing countries, the EU, and chocolate consumers
The conference has been organised by Amnesty UK’s Country Coordinators for Europe as part of Human Rights week (with a chocolate theme!) at York University’s Centre for Applied Human Rights.
Free to attend but booking is recommended.
