Edinburgh International Book Festival: Using fiction to teach about the death penalty

Date: Thu 22 August 2013

Using fiction for teachers to teach about the death penalty
Fiction is a very powerful means of inspiring and informing young people about human rights.

This event will focus on award-winning author Annabel Pitcher’s new novel Ketchup Clouds and will look at profound issues of guilt and punishment. Ketchup Clouds, which won the Waterstones Children's Book of the Year 2013, has a central character who writes to a man on death row in order to articulate and explore her own dilemmas in life.

Annabel Pitcher and specialist English teacher Claire Dancer (of Wester Hailes Education Centre) will discuss how to use fiction to stimulate lively discussion around the death penalty across the secondary curriculum.

The event will be chaired by Guardian’s children’s book editor Julia Eccleshare.
