20th Anniversary of the crackdown at Tiananmen Square
Date: Thu 4 June 2009
On 4 June, the 20th anniversary of the violent crackdown at Tiananmen Square, survivors will go the Chinese embassy in London with Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen, where they will lay flowers of remembrance for those who died and in defiance of the Chinese authorities unwillingness to even acknowledge a crackdown took place.
Amnesty International members up and down the country are holding candle-lit vigils and other events this week, as the organisation calls on the Chinese authorities to allow a public inquiry to be held into the events of 4 June 1989 and the brutal crackdown that followed, in which over 1,000 people are believed to have been killed.
