The crisis in Sudan

If a man goes out to farm, they get shot. And when a woman goes out they get mugged and raped. About two, three, four, five women have been raped recently. We can't do anything to stop it in case they kill us. |

The conflict in the Sudanese region of Darfur, and in neighbouring Chad and Central Africa Republic (CAR), has created an ongoing humanitarian and human rights crisis. Over 300,000 people are believed to have lost their lives since the conflict erupted in February 2003. Around three million civilians have fled from their homes. Some 650,000 are denied access to aid.
Report: Displaced in Darfur
Amnesty International's report, Displaced in Darfur - A generation of anger warns that the security situation for internally displaced people in Darfur is
on a knife-edge with a generation of Darfuris now growing up in extreme fear and
insecurity in camps awash with weapons - a potentially explosive combination.
The report outlines the current state of insecurity in camps for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Darfur and the potential consequences and possible remedies.

Latest developments
Sudan accepts AU/UN peacekeeping force In a joint statement concluding discussions between the African Union (AU) and UN with the government of Sudan regarding the hybrid operation it appears Sudan has finally accepted phase three of the Annan Plan, the hybrid force of a joint AU/UN force. Hopefully, this won't be a repeat of November 2006 when Sudan accepted the hybrid operation proposal then backtracked on its agreement. Reportedly, the UN/AU force will be commanded by an African and Sudan insists that the first countries that can deploy are Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
However, the campaigning continues as we are hearing that full deployment of the force could be as late as March 2008 and this would be totally unacceptable.

Arms continuing to fuel human rights violations in Darfur
The Amnesty report Sudan: Arms continuing to fuel human rights violations in Darfur reveals details of the uncontrolled arms exports that have fuelled massive human rights abuses in Sudan, despite a UN embargo, issued in March 2005, covering all parties to the conflict.
Based on the testimony of hundreds of survivors gathered by Amnesty International as well as commercial documents, UN arms trade data and other sources the report calls for urgent measures by UN Security Council to immediately strengthen the implementation of the arms embargo for all parties to the conflict.

of Darfur. This force has been refused by the Sudanese government.
