Junior urgent action network

Junior urgent actions are monthly appeals which have been specially designed for young people aged 7-11 working with the help of an adult (usually a parent or teacher). The actions are part of Amnesty's worldwide letter-writing campaign on behalf of victims of human rights violations.

About Junior Urgent Actions

Each junior urgent action is written in simple language and large type, and will usually be asking for appeals on behalf of other young people. A map of the relevant country and continent is included, as well as information about the country's population and official language.

Graphic details of ill-treatment or torture are not included. A copy of the original case sheet, containing more details and country background information, is included for the parent's or teacher's reference.

Are the Cases Political?

Junior urgent actions are not political. In the last eight years, young people have written on behalf of victims of human rights violations in over 50 different countries. These victims have included:
  • Street children ill-treated by police in Brazil and Guatemala
  • Young people ill-treated by police in Romania, Turkey and South Africa
  • Child soldiers in Sri Lanka, Sudan and Uganda
  • Detained children in Malawi and Rwanda
  • Human rights activists in Honduras, Tunisia and Algeria
  • Teachers in Peru and Burundi
  • Parents, families and whole communities under threat

Child Protection Policy

Amnesty has a child protection policy to assist people working on human rights with young people and protect children from abuse. A code of practice for working with children is included as part of the policy. All adults working with children are expected to adhere to this code. To get a copy of the policy please email the Education and Student team below.
