Demanding Change: Our work so far
To give you an idea of the work we have been doing since uprisings began to spread across the Middle East and North Africa, we have compiled a list of activities across the year. This is just a brief overview and doesn't capture all of the work that goes on behind the scenes. We nevertheless hope that it is a useful research tool.
February 2011
- EGYPT: Reported on the torture of demonstrators by the army
- LIBYA: Called for Libya to be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC)
- IRAN: Condemned the authorities' crackdown on protests
March 2011
- TUNISIA: Launched a comprehensive report on the killings of protesters by the security forces
- EGYPT: Documented the use of forced 'virginity tests' against female demonstrators
- LIBYA: Reported a campaign of enforced disappearance by pro-Gaddafi forces
- BAHRAIN: Accused the government of Bahrain of using excessive force (PDF)
April 2011
- SYRIA: Raised the alarm that violations appeared to amount to crimes against humanity and called on the UN Security Council to refer the situation to the ICC
- BAHRAIN: Showed that international pressure was needed to end the human rights crisis
- IRAQ: Condemned the crackdown against peaceful protest
- YEMEN: Called on the international community to help probe the scores of protest killings
May 2011
- SYRIA: Exposed that 'a shoot to kill' policy was being used by security forces
- LIBYA: Documented pro-Gaddafi forces' war crimes and possible crimes against humanity (PDF)
- EGYPT: Released a major report into the 'January 25 Revolution' accusing the security forces of excessive force (PDF)
July 2011
- SAUDI ARABIA: Published a leaked anti-terror law that would classify dissent as a terrorist crime
- SAUDI ARABIA: Had our website blocked by the government as a result of the above revelation
- SYRIA: Accused the authorities of crimes against humanity in the town of Tell Kalakh
August 2011
- SYRIA: Revealed a steep rise in the number of deaths in custody (PDF)
- LIBYA: Exposed massacres of detainees by pro-Gaddafi forces
- LIBYA: Documented attacks on sub-Saharan Africans, highlighting the increased risk they face
September 2011
- LIBYA: Documented a 'settling of scores' by forces loyal to the National Transitional Council
- LIBYA: Criticised European governments for failing refugees stranded on Libya's borders
- EGYPT: Urged the authorities to address the needs of the 12 million slum-dwellers (PDF)
- BAHRAIN: Called the sentencing of 20 doctors by a military court a 'travesty of justice'
October 2011
- SYRIA: Exposed that ex-pats in at least eight countries were being threatened by embassies
- SYRIA: Reported on the use of hospitals as places of repression and torture (PDF)
- LIBYA: Documented torture and ill-treatment of detainees held by forces loyal to the NTC
- REGION: Published stats on key countries supplying arms to the Middle East and North Africa
- EGYPT: Campaigned for women in Egypt to play a greater role in public life
