Gaby Rado Memorial Award

Open to up-and-coming journalists who have covered national or international human rights stories in broadcast, online or print media for less than five years. Work must have been published by a third party on a UK website, or in broadcast or print media aimed at a UK audience. The judges will particularly look for coverage that brings to the fore the human stories behind the headlines.

This award was established with the help of the family, friends and colleagues of the journalist Gaby Rado, who died in Iraq in 2003.

Entry guidelines Television and Radio

  • Open to journalists who have covered national or international human rights stories in broadcast, online or print media for less than five years. Work must  have been published by a third party on a UK website, or in broadcast or print media aimed at a UK audience.
  • We require a portfolio of up to three examples of work published or broadcast
  • You must answer the three synopsis questions on the entry form for each example
  • Please do not send further supplementary material or information as this will not be considered

For television only please post the following to 17-25 New Inn Yard, London, EC2A 3EA:

  • A CV of the nominated journalist and a brief letter from an editor, lecturer, or other relevant person supporting the nomination (this can also be uploaded via the entry form)
  • One copy of each entry on digibeta without burnt-in timecode (BITC)
  • Two copies of each entry on DVD with a burnt-in timecode. Label each entry clearly and print the duration and TX date of the programme on each DVD
  • Please supply your broadcast submission in 16:9 ratio

For radio only please post the following to 17-25 New Inn Yard, London, EC2A 3EA:

  • A CV of the nominated journalist and a brief letter from an editor, lecturer, or other relevant person supporting the nomination (this can also be uploaded via the entry form)
  • Please send two copies of each entry on CD
  • Label all discs clearly with the name and duration of the programme plus date of broadcast

  1. Full title of entry
  2. Date of broadcast
  3. Background information on the entry including: How the idea for the piece came about, what challenges were encountered in producing the piece, how it helped to further the understanding of the issues covered, what impact it had (i.e. number of viewers/listeners and their response, government reaction, policy change, etc). We would also like to know how and why you started working in human rights journalism, how you have developed as a journalist since starting to cover these issues, and what you feel you have achieved.

  11. Name of other contributors who should be credited (e.g. camera operator, researcher)

  14. A high res copy of the logo of the production company and broadcaster
The deadline for entering the 2013 Media Awards has now passed.

Entry Guidelines Newspaper or Magazines

  • Open to journalists who have covered national or international human rights stories in broadcast, online or print media for less than five years
  • A portfolio of up to three examples of work published or broadcast
  • If entering more than once, you must complete one form per entry
  • You must answer the three synopsis questions on the entry form
  • Please do not send further supplementary material or information as this will not be considered
  • If you have problems completing the form, call 0207 033 1544.

As well as completing the form, please post the following to 17-25 New Inn Yard, London, EC2A 3EA:

  • A CV of the nominated journalist and a brief letter from an editor, lecturer, or other relevant person supporting the nomination (this can also be uploaded via the entry form)
  • Eight printed full colour copies of each article with details of the date published.
  • A DVD including pdf files of the article. We will accept a maximum of three articles if they form part of a series.
