STAN: The Student Action Network Committee

The STAN committee is a body of six Amnesty student activists who are elected on one year terms at student conference in November.

Our job is to relay student views and opinions to the Education and Student staff team so that they can better support us as Amnesty members. We are an advisory committee rather than a management committee but our voice is listened to, and our suggestions are always taken on board and thoroughly considered.

As STAN members, we meet every couple of months throughout the year, and help to organise student events such as Action For Change and Student Conference. We all have regions of the country that we keep in touch with, and in so doing keep the staff informed of what is going on nationally. We also have individual responsibilities decided on in our first meeting, detailed below.

At present I am studying history at the University of York, and have been actively involved with Amnesty since my first year. As I am originally from Northumberland, this year I will be responsible for looking after the Amnesty groups in the north of England, so get it touch with me if you have any questions about what STAN can do for you.  In addition to this I will also be taking on the campaigns and activism advisory role to help groups take Amnesty's campaigns onto university campuses.

CaitlinI've known about Amnesty's great work for a long time, but been an active student member for 3 years now. I'm the chair of the University of Nottingham Amnesty society, where I'm also a final-year History and Politics student. As part of the STAN committee I'm going to be liaising with all the Midlands groups, and I'm also going to be an advisor on fundraising for student groups in general.

HannahI'm a 4th year law student at the University of Edinburgh, one of Amnesty's School Speakers, and a self-confessed policy geek. On STAN I'll be leading on connecting students to Amnesty's policy and governance, as well as being the committee's Secretary. Oh, and I'll be proudly representing Welsh and Northern Irish groups - so if you're from either of those places, please do get in touch!

I'm in my 4th year at the University of Stirling, and I'm overseeing and coordinating the Scottish groups. I have been involved with the Stirling Amnesty group since my first year, and have since then been part of developing the group from scratch into a vibrant and visible club on campus. With this in mind, I'm very excited about being responsible for groups' development, especially supporting new and struggling student groups all over the UK.

My priority this year is to create an exceptional and user-friendly website designed for students.  I'm a third year British Politics and Legislative Studies student from the University of Hull. Currently on placement in London, working for a MP. I was president last year and I have experience in developing a group. Can't wait to get in touch, give me a bell!

TomI am a fourth year student at the University of Exeter. I read Arabic with Management and have spent time throughout my degree working and studying in the Middle East. I am the President of our Amnesty Society and will be representing the South and South-West on the Stan Committee. My focus will be on Graduate Retention. 

  

 

How to run for election to the STAN Comittee

As part of an affiliated group you have the opportunity to run for election to the Student Action Network (STAN) Committee. Elections take place every year at Student Conference in November.

Who are the STAN committee?

  • The STAN committee consists of six student group members elected annually at the student conference
  • They represent their experiences of student activities to Amnesty International UK
  • They support student activists around the UK at national and regional events
  • They lead student events throughout the year

Committee members need to:

  • Be available to attend a mandatory handover and induction weekend in December 2013 in London, all expenses are covered by AIUK
  • Be available to attend committee meetings throughout the year. These are always at weekends.  In 2011-12 we had meetings in December, February, May, July, September and October
  • Have enthusiasm and dedication to Amnesty's work
  • Commit to attend key Amnesty events throughout the year such as Action For Change and the National Conference/AGM in Spring 2014.

What we provide for committee members:

  • Facilitated meetings throughout the year
  • Full reimbursement of expenses
  • Training and support from AIUK staff
