Amnesty's range of resources for five to eleven-year-olds supports learning about human rights issues and taking action for human rights.

Free award winning book for primary schools

Primary schools across the UK can claim a free copy of Amnesty's award-winning book We Are All Born Free, thanks to acclaimed actor Emma Thompson and other generous donors.

We Are All Born Free is a superb collection of 30 beautiful illustrations that interpret our human rights, suitable for ages 5+. Top illustrators who contributed pictures include Axel Scheffler (of Gruffalo fame), Korky Paul and John Burningham - a selection is shown in the slideshow above.

Alongside We Are All Born Free schools will also receive a free copy of Amnesty's primary schools resource Learning About Human Rights in the Classroom, which is full of innovative lesson plans to help explore human rights in the classroom.

A free resource of ten interactive lesson plans and activities to introduce human rights to pupils aged five to eleven years old. These lessons will help provide pupils with an understanding of their own human rights and the values and attitudes that underpin them, and to foster attitudes of respect and an appreciation of the uniqueness of each individual. Pupils will also develop skills to enable them to take action to defend human rights.

Lift Off Series


THE RIGHT START
Age: Primary 1-3
A resource to develop skills of empathy, communication, cooperation, respect and responsibility and conflict resolution. With these skills young children can live the message of human rights in their daily lives and then use these skills to engage fully with knowledge based learning on human rights contained in the next resource. These activities link directly to strands relating to the PDMU curriculum.

LIFT OFF
Age: Primary 4-5
A resource focused on knowledge of human rights issues while also building on the human rights skills and attitudes fostered and developed in The Right Start. This resource contains ten lesson plans focusing on equality, refugee issues, the role of human rights promoters, needs, wants and rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. There is also an Irish language version of this resource available (contact student@amnesty.org.uk for more details). These lessons link directly to strands relating to the PDMU curriculum.

ME, YOU, EVERYONE
Age: Primary 6 and 7
A resource focusing on knowledge of human rights issues while further fostering and developing the skills and attitudes acquired from the previous resources. Ten lesson plans focus on identity, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, taking responsibility, gender issues,  valuing difference, child labour, conflict and dialogue, the role of children's rights promoters and defenders and how to take action for human rights. These lesson units link directly to strands relating to the PDMU curriculum.

Film clip: We Are All Born Free

This short film was produced to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is an excellent introduction to human rights for younger children. The film could be used within lessons or in assemblies.

The materials were launched by Education Minister Leighton Andrews and Keith Towler, Children's Commissioner for Wales. The launch featured school council members presenting their views on human rights, and included an exhibition of images from We Are All Born Free, a book for young children that illustrates human rights.
