Do urgent actions work?

YES! We estimate that between one and two thirds of the urgent actions issued per year result in positive development or improvement in the situation of the individual/s concerned.

Rebiya Kadeer, ex-Prisoner of conscience, China, released from prison in 2005 after 6 years in detention said:

Rebiya-Kadeer-100"I don't believe that I would be alive today without the support of AI...Thanks to the many thousands of letters written by AI members, my detention conditions changed, I could see my children once a month and I received medical treatment. The support of AI gave me back my inner strength."

In one to two of every three urgent action cases:

  • a prisoner is released
  • a person believed to have been 'disappeared' is found
  • a death sentence is commuted
  • a prisoner receives the medical attention they badly need
  • incommunicado detention ends

Of course, Amnesty rarely works alone on cases - these positive developments are often the result of the hard work and pressure applied by many organisations and individuals both within the country concerned and overseas.

Send messages of hope to four people and their families in different corners of the world who are suffering from human rights abuses. Your messages will make them feel less alone and frightened, and make governments and people across the world pay attention to the fact they are being treated unfairly.
