SINTRAEMCALI action

Many governments across South America fail to comply with their commitments to uphold fundamental human rights. Widespread torture, unlawful killings by police and arbitrary detention persist. The "war on terror" undermines human rights in the name of security.

Political armed groups and criminal gangs, principally those engaged in drug trafficking, have an increasing impact on people's fundamental rights. Poverty and discrimination affect millions of people, particularly women, children, indigenous people and Afro-descendant communities. Human rights defenders continue to hold both governments and armed groups to account, in defiance of harassment and persecution.

A big thank you to Peace Community supporters

Soidarity PostersIn December 2011, Amnesty launched a visual solidarity action for the Peace Community of Columbia. Both local networks and youth supporters were asked to take photos of themselves holding up the following message, "I am standing with the Peace Community of San Jose de Apartado". Amnesty received over 150 responses in total - which were then made into posters. The Community have since used these posters in "diverse ceremonies" and for "educational activities". Amnesty and the Peace Community would like to thank everyone who took part.
